Chapter Sixteen

ANDREW

My mind was still reeling over Aiden’s confession. I was his mate? I almost wanted to laugh, if I wasn’t so mind blown about it. And worried. He said he would keep it to himself, but I was on edge about Ethan finding out. My first instinct after so many years of pretending was to lie to him, tell him I never considered it before Aiden, and it was a shock. But that just made me hate myself even more. Ethan didn’t have to tell me about his animal. He didn’t have to tell me about any of this. Corey spent years hiding it from his family until Ethan’s confession made him brave enough to tell the truth. Ethan could’ve done the same thing. He trusted me instead and bared his soul. And I was too much of a coward to afford him the same courtesy.

A knock at the door drew Aiden away. I wasn’t surprised to see Ethan standing there. I’d been gone a while, but anxiety made my body tense, worried that he’d somehow be able to tell what we did or the fact that we were mates. I didn’t know enough about shifters to know if other shifters could tell who was mated to who.

Ethan looked grumpy, but he gave no indication that he suspected us. He looked past Aiden to me, crossing his arms with a scowl.

“How long are you gonna avoid me?”

And just like that, all my annoyance from earlier came screaming back, and I glared at him. “How long are you going to act like an ass?”

He lifted his chin defiantly, clearly not done with his attitude, but Aiden interrupted him before he could say something stupid.

“I’ve convinced Andrew to give Christian a shot. He will start tomorrow to help ease the load. Andrew has also agreed to stay at Blackridge Haven for the time being, to heal and to rest.” His voice was calm and smooth for the most part, but the last few words he emphasized with a growl, reminding my little brother that him being a dick wasn’t helping matters. It felt nice that Aiden had my back, but it worried me a little all the same. I didn't want Ethan drawing to any wrong conclusions. Or the right conclusions I wasn’t sure about yet.

He glanced at Aiden for a moment before dropping his stance. “Fine. He needs rest, though. And food. You haven’t eaten–”

I rolled my eyes. “I ate here. You’re my little brother, not the other way around. I don’t need you taking care of me.”

Ethan opened his mouth to argue, only to be interrupted by Aiden again. “As I said before, Andrew, Christian will be over early. Get some rest, and I will check in with you again tomorrow to see how you are getting along.”

It almost felt like he was dismissing us from his home. But with the way he was glaring at Ethan, I got the feeling it was more of a distraction for my brother instead of kicking us out.
